We have left the Wujek Ridge now and embarked on a crossing of the Sallee Snowfield. To our West lie the Cordiner Peaks, exposed and intimidating rock spires interspersed with hanging glaciers and cascading icefalls. To our East the Forestal Range has appeared just beyond the horizon. Our progress was slow and the going tough today. Deep, sticky icing sugar snow and an uphill gradient made hauling our sleds difficult. The Sallee Snowfield gently undulates and the uphill sections felt longer and more frequent than the downhills. We’re excited to start the next phase of the expedition and cross these snowfields on route to the Antarctic plateau.

These tough days on the ice remind me of “Murph” a full body CrossFit workout and my nemesis. You run one mile, do 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 bodyweight squats, and then run another mile while wearing a 20lb vest. Murph has always been my benchmark, for over ten years I have been training with Strength and Conditioning coach Joe Bonington. The years spent training at Joes Basecamp where some of the best, I made life long friend and the community atmosphere was incredible. Today I thought about all those friends and all the workouts we did together a community of like-minded people planning and preparing for adventures great and small – Gareth
